Adult-Centered Data: 

  • Approximately 1 in 5 adults in the U.S. - 43.8 million, will experience a mental illness in a given year.
  • Approximately 1 in 25 adults in the U.S. - 9.8 million, will experience a series mental illness that substantially interferes with major life activities.
  • Approximately 10.2 million adults have co-occurring mental health and addiction disorders.
  • Depression is the leading cause of disability worldwide .
  • Serious mental illness costs America $193 billion in lost earning every year.
  • Approximately 60% of adults with a mental illness to not receive treatment.

Youth-Centered Data:

  • Approximately 50% of all lifetime cases of mental illness begin by age 14 and 75% begin by age 24.
  • The average delay between onset of symptoms and intervention is 8-10 years.
  • Approximately 37% of students with a mental health condition, age 14 and older, will drop out of school. This is the largest dropout rate of any group.
  • Approximately 70% of youth in state and local juvenile justice systems have a mental illness.
  • Suicide is the 3rd leading cause of death in youth ages 10-24.
